The Pokémon Gengar cake topper weighed a whopping 2lbs and 8-ounces, stood 11-inches tall, 8-inches wide and was inserted into the cake for 2+ hours. This tutorial will show you how to support a heavy cake topper with success.

No worries. No cake implosions. No toppling over. Go ahead and take mega photos, chat with moms, eat delicious food and slam the piñata!

It’s party time!

Chilling and supporting a cake the correct way is important. Here’s some expert advice to ensure that the cake and heavy cake topper will be troublesome-free.

I’m a Bubble Tea Fat Straw enthusiast for cake support, but in this instance the nightmare of a happenchance and the inkling of a grandson reduced to tears, the straws were put aside and replaced with wooden dowels.

It’s the GlamMa’s Accident Insurance Policy – may never be needed, but if it happens, glad the premium is paid in full.

Joking, I’d told Mason that if perchance an implosion occurred after placing Gengar on top of the cake, the guests were going to have the unique opportunity to have a one-on-one Pokémon cake fight.

He was not impressed.

Six-year-old minds cannot fathom the possibilities of a spontaneous combustion happening at their birthday party and laughing eons later over the memories with their friends.

Gengar needed to stay standing! On the cake! Until blowing out the candles! Period.

Support a Heavy Cake Topper – Equipment Required

 Heavy Cake Topper – Standing with Dowels

The tutorial photos are ‘after the party’. Gengar came back home for this tutorial.

The foam core board must have support with cake dowels.  Below is an example of an 8″ cake with dowels and foam core board placement:HeavyCakeTopperStep1:   Wooden dowels are needed to support the cake topper. Sharpen the dowels with a pencil sharpener to a point.

Note: the sharpened dowels that were used for the Gengar Evolving Cake were measured 3-3/4″  from the base of the cake topper; the cake was 4″deep. The dowels need to be long enough without having to push through the cake board.

Step 2: Use an Anvil Pruner Tool to cut the dowels to size. 

HeavyCakeTopperFor health and safety issues: the pruner tool needs to be used specifically for sugar art. Do not use or sterilize old garden cutters.

Step 3: Knead the Wilton’s Gum Paste. With a brush, use  a dab of water to adhere the dowels. Roll the gum paste into a log; the length and width of the dowels; adding 1/2″ to the top; secure the dowel into the sugar paste. Gently press, covering the dowels, work and smooth the gum paste to encase and cover the dowels; allow to completely dry.

Note: The face-down Gengar Cake Topper was allowed to dry for 3-days before moving.

Take a close look at the photo,  1/2″ of gum paste was added on each side: after the wooden dowels were firmly encase with gumpaste.

After the gum paste drying time: Double-check to guarantee that the dowels are firm in place; without any movement. If a dowel moves at all, reinforce the top and bottom (near the dowel ends) with additional gumpaste; allow to dry overnight before moving.

Step 4. Measure the  width of the topper to determine the size of the board needed to support the heavy cake topper.

Step 5: Set the diameter of the Martha Stewart Circle Cutter, place foam core on to the Fiskar’s Mat; press hands firmly onto the cutter and rotate until the blade cuts through to the mat; remove foam core circle.

HeavyCakeTopperStep 6: Dip the sharpen ends of the dowels into gel color. Holding the cake topper over the foam core board, mark  on the foam core where the holes of the dowels are going to be on the board; positioned on the cake.

Stept 7: Punch the designated holes with an ice pick;  slightly enlarge the holes. Insert into the holes the same size dowel as the cake topper dowel and enlarge the hole until the dowel goes through with ease.

Step 8: With a small amount of Crisco or Lard, Coat the cut-out foam core board; cover with modeling chocolate or fondant. Allow to dry.

Step 9: Center the covered foam core board on the cake. Slide the wooden dowels into the designated holes.

HeavyCakeTopperNote: Assembly of the top cake topper needs to be on-site or at the party.  Do not attempt to move the cake or travel with the heavy cake topper assembled on the cake.

The foam core board must have support with cake dowels.  Below is an example of an 8″ cake with dowels and foam core board placement:

Step 1: Measure the diameter of the topper to determine that size of foam core board needed to support the heavy cake topper.

Step 2: Set the diameter of the Martha Stewart Circle Cutter, place foam core on to the Fiskar’s Mat; press hands firmly onto the cutter and rotate until the blade cuts through to the mat; remove foam core circle.

Step 3: With a small amount of Crisco or Lard, Coat the cut-out foam core board; cover with modeling chocolate or fondant. Allow to dry.

Step 4: Center the covered board on the cake; place the heavy cake topper on the board. 

Note: Assembly of the top cake topper needs to be on-site or at the party.  Do not attempt to place the heavy cake topper assembled on the cake and travel.
